County Youth Orchestra

Hertfordshire County Youth Orchestra is putting on a concert in the Marktkirche in Wiesbaden on 26th August.

Hertfordshire is proud to run two county level orchestras for young people. The County Youth Orchestra for students aged 14 – 21 of grade 8 plus standard is recognised as one of the country’s leading youth orchestras. Strong artistic direction and imaginative programming is thanks to the excellent partnership with Principal Conductor, Peter Stark, who has held this post for more than 20 years.

Challenging, large scale works such as Schoenberg’s Gurre-Lieder (with the London choruses) and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring (performed with dance) are a thumb print of the orchestra, and a tribute to the incredibly high level of playing and commitment from the talented youngsters, many of whom go on to a career as a professional musician. In recent years, repertoire has included Mahler Symphonies No. 5 & 6, Lutoslawski Concerto for Orchestra, Bernstein Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, Bartok The Miraculous Mandarin and Holst The Planets

The orchestra has made a number of recordings, including their acclaimed disc of Elgar’s Violin Concerto (violin – David Greed) in 2004 and Edwin Roxburgh’s Saturn in 2005 which was released commercially by NMC.

The orchestra benefits from intensive sectional coaching regularly premieres new works and most recently toured to Madrid. Hertfordshire County Youth Orchestra is greatly looking forward to touring in the Rhineland this year and would love to welcome you to their concert in the Marktkirche in Wiesbaden on 26th August at 5 p.m. Entry is free!
