Worth doing

No trip to Fatih would be complete without a visit to the Grand Bazaar and a tour of the Valens Aqueduct and the Grand Palace.

Cultural highlights of Fatih that should not be missed are for instance the Cisterna Basilica (Yerebatan Sarnıcı) from late antiquity, which is located west of the Hagia Sophia, and of course the Grand Bazaar (Kapali Carsi). The Bazaar has about 4,000 shops on an area of more than 31,000 square metres, offering an incredible selection of wares. It was established during the 15th century under Sultan Mehmet Fatih after the conquest of Constantinople. The heart of the Basra is the Eski Bedesten (translated: Old Cloth Hall, which was originally intended to be a treasury). Even today, gold and silver traders offer their precious wares under the domes of the hall.

On the way to the Grand Bazaar, which is located across from the main piers for ferry traffic between the continents, a visitor might take a stroll through the spice bazaar "Mısır Çarşısı", which offers not only spices but also clothing, electronics, and many other goods. A famous traditional restaurant is located over the main entrance at Galata Bridge.

The German Fountain (Alman Cesmesi), a pavilion-like fountain structure at the northern end of the Hippodrome, which was built in 1900 in memory of the visit by German Emperor Wilhelm II. two years prior, is also worth a look. Another unforgettable experience is a boat ride on the Bosporus, which should be part of any trip to Istanbul, just like Turkish coffee and a visit to the Hamam.
