Sport City Wiesbaden

Role models are in demand. Particularly in sport. Because they motivate the young talent and encourage them not to limit their own sporting activities to the aisles of the football stadium or to following sporting events on the television. The Hessian state capital has been a “city of sport” for years – with a rising trend.

The fact that the women’s team of the Volleyball-Club Wiesbaden e.V. (VCW) is just as successful in the first league as the judokas and that the football club SV Wehen Wiesbaden is cutting quite a dash in the second football league is showing an effect: not only that the teams’ home games are always ensured well-filled stadiums and sports halls, they also contribute to the fact that Wiesbaden’s sports associations are much in demand.

Around 80,000 Wiesbaden residents are members of one or more of the total of 240 sports associations in the city, which cover just about every type of sport. The Sport and Recreation Authority of the city makes the approx. 70 gyms available to the sport associations free of charge. In addition the Local Education Authority has other venues under its control. Futhermore there are numerous sporting venues which have, for instance, running tracks temporarily available to the public.

Whether competitive sport or sporting events, youth or general sport or the numerous offers for people with disabilities – Wiesbaden offers something for everyone. Here, active participation is as easy as cheering from the sidelines at such spectacular and popular events.

In Wiesbaden and in the region, sport is a way of life. Also, because well-developed paths positively cry out to be walked, the hilly landscape of the region provides a relishing challenge for cycling fans – and because, as well as classics like tennis or golf, the city also offers venues to ensure the satisfaction of skateboarders and mountain bikers. Sport’s “enjoyment factor” is demonstrated each year at the Funsport Days in Wiesbaden’s city centre.

In terms of society sport events too, the state capital plays in the top league – this is demonstrated not least by the “Sport Ball” of the German Sport Foundation at the convention and event centre RheinMain CongressCenter Wiesbaden (formerly Rhein-Main-Hallen). State organisations are also represented, such as the Hessischer Landessportbund with its annual “Olympic Ball Night” in the Kurhaus Wiesbaden.

The sport promoting association of Wiesbaden (WISPO) regularly provides opportunity for exercise in the beautiful centrally-situated Kurpark: with the 25-hour run, sporting enthusiasts can prove their endurance and by their participation also make a financial contribution to the promotion and support of promising sporting talents.

Hiking days, events for fans of Nordic Walking, swimming in one of the many outdoor pools – appealing also for their glorious positions – and indoor pools of the city or tree-totree climbing accompanied by professionals on the Wiesbaden Neroberg – active sport fans in the Hessian state capital have as much opportunity to indulge themselves as those whose passion is watching excellent sporting events.
