International May Theatre Festival
April 26th until May 28th, 2017
Every year, the International May Theatre Festival is the cultural highlight in the city of Wiesbaden. Founded as the "Emperor's Festival" by Emperor Wilhelm II in 1896, the Festival is the second oldest theatre festival in Germany after the one in Bayreuth. Theatre companies and ensembles from around the world meet in May following an invitation by artistic director Uwe Eric Laufenberg. Pieces from the baroque and modern eras, opera, dance, and drama, guest performances and evening galas, whether from Vienna or Berlin, from Sweden or China – the Hessian State Theatre presents the most fascinating productions and artists.
2017's International May Theatre Festival focused on "The Ring of the Nibelung", Wagner's four-part masterpiece: directed by Uwe Eric Laufenberg, two entire cycles have been put on stage. A Wagner gala concert, conducted by Patrick Lange, marked the grand opening on April 30th.
