International May Theatre Festival
From 5 May 2018
Every year, the International May Theatre Festival is the cultural highlight in the city of Wiesbaden. Founded as the "Emperor's Festival" by Emperor Wilhelm II in 1896, the Festival is the second oldest theatre festival in Germany after the one in Bayreuth. Theatre companies and ensembles from around the world meet in May, following an invitation by artistic director Uwe Eric Laufenberg. Pieces from the baroque and modern eras, opera, dance, and drama, guest performances and evening galas, whether from Vienna or Berlin, from Sweden or China – the Hessian State Theatre presents the most fascinating productions and artists.
The grand opening of the International May Theatre Festival 2018 takes place on 5 May, with Verdi's "A Masked Ball" under the musical direction of Patrick Lange and in the production by Beka Savić.
