Wine Stand of the Twin Town Klagenfurt
For the third time, the Carinthian association of wine growers, “Vinum Carinthiae”, which also calls itself “Klagenfurt city vintner”, will be offering wines from the “Seewiese” vineyard of the state capital of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee at the twin city wine stand at the Rheingau Wine Festival.
Austria’s most southerly federal state of Carinthia was a white spot on the wine map of Austria for a long time. The friendship vineyard newly erected on the Klagenfurt “Seewiese” with vines from the twin city of Wiesbaden in 1973 brought about a renaissance of wine-growing in Carinthia. Climatically, the location is considered to be one of the best in Carinthia and offers a wide view of the Wörthersee lake below as well as the picturesque rock faces of the Carnic Alps and Karwanks to the south.
Carinthia is known for many different kinds of soil, from the poorer crystalline soils through loamy limestone soils to the very minerally slate soils of the Palaeozoic era on the “Seewiese”.
From there, delicately fruity and minerally white wines of the Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc types with great finesse as well as a very fruity white wine cuvée can be tasted. The “Zweigelt” red wines are fruity and elegantly structured.
In addition to the “Seewiese” wines, more white wines with an intense bouquet as well as dessert and sparkling wines from other members of the Carinthian association of wine growers enhance the range on offer at the Rheingau Wine Festival.
