Weingut W.J. Schäfer

Graduate engineer, Josef Schäfer, has been running the seven-hectare business with his wife, Jutta, since 1997. Daughter Anja, who enrolled in Geisenheim after completing her vintner apprenticeship, can’t wait to start working in her parents’ business. Weingut Schäfer concentrates on Riesling, however Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc have their established place in the range of products. The Gewürztraminer is considered the speciality of the house. “Schäfer wines” are characterised by fine fruity scented notes. There is an intentional lack of emphasis on quantity in order to give pure class the centre stage. Such qualitative ambition is awarded top marks in practice. After four federal and four state honour awards, numerous prizes at the state wine awards, Mundus vini or the Fulda “Spätlesereiter” competition, the Schäfer family is delighted about the awards received in 2016 at the “ProRiesling-Erzeugerpreis” and, yet again at the “best of Riesling”. In 2017, two Spätlese wines from the house of Schäfer received 91 points at the “best of Riesling”.
