Who does not dream of one fine day turning their great, life-long dream into reality. For the Swiss man Urban Kaufmann, this was the vision of his own winery. Up until 2013, he was the owner of one of the most successful Appenzell cheese-making businesses. He travelled Europe’s best wine growing regions for many years to find the ideal location for his dream. He found it in the Rheingau. Together with Eva Raps, who managed the business of the VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikatsweingüter - Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates) for many years, he has been realising his vision of Rheingauer wine step by step in Weingut Urban Kaufmann. The new Hattenheim duo is, by the way, not only dedicated to the Rheingau classic Riesling, but also the Pinot family surrounding Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris and, in particular, Pinot Noir, with which the winery has been causing a stir in Germany for over twenty years. The grapes from the best vineyards in famous isolated locations such as the classified Hattenheimer Wisselbrunnen grow ecologically and form the perfect base for an independent interpretation of the Rheingau wine culture in the best possible sense.
