Paulinenstraße 7

It is readily apparent that the official residence of the President of the United States in Washington was the model for the "White House" villa. This was done on the request of Emma Pabst, the American wife of the sparkling wine manufacturer Söhnlein. But the design of the house was possibly also influenced by the then emerging neo-Classicism. The Swiss architects Otto Wilhelm Pfleghard and Max Haefeli erected the building between 1903 and 1906. They had become famous while working in the architecture office of Alfred Schnellenberg.

Since the time of the death of Friedrich Wilhelm Söhnlein, in 1938, the villa has been used for various functions. In 1940, it was leased by the police administration, four years later it was purchased by the "Third Reich," and from the end of the war until 1995 it was used by the American military administration.
