Lang Lang plays Bach

Superstar Lang Lang will be a guest at the Kurhaus on Sunday, March 1, 2020, at 7 pm and will play Johann Sebastian Bach's "Goldberg Variations".

Superstar! Without doubt, the right title for Lang Lang. He has been at the pinnacle of the piano world for 20 years – and yet he has never really stood still. He changes, works hard on himself, breaks new ground. He also extends his repertoire continuously. One might not necessarily think that this determined, world-class pianist would approach the great masters of music history so conscientiously and with such respect. After all, he has achieved almost everything there is to achieve and he is not even 40.

However, "you do not get everything in life because you want it and make an effort", says Lang Lang too. Some things take time and patience. He indulged himself in a considerable amount of time in approaching Bach’s Aria with 40 Variations BWV 988, called the "Goldberg Variations". They were only included in his concert repertoire recently. And yet with them he has opened another chapter of his unparalleled career and is now presenting these “new pages” in Wiesbaden.

Count Hermann Carl von Keyserlingk is said to have suffered from insomnia and therefore wanted to hear piano pices by Johann Sebastian Bach “which should be of a smooth and somewhat lively character that he might be a little cheered up by them in his sleepless nights”. His harpsichordist, Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, was to perform the pieces for him. That’s how the legend goes. Whether fact or fiction: with his “Goldberg Variations”, Bach wrote music history and proved his full mastery.
