Jephtha - Handel's dramatic oratorio

Oratoria in three acts by Georg Friedrich Händel (1685 – 1759), Performed in English, with surtitles, Libretto: Thomas Morell, First performance: 1752 in London.

An archaic story about love and war, power and a disastrous belief in the gods: George Frideric Handel's dramatic oratorio portrays the subject matter of the supreme war commander Jephtha from the Old Testament, who rashly promised the Almighty that if he is victorious, he will sacrifice the first creature he meets on his return. He is met by his beloved daughter Iphis and he now has to choose: religion or humanity? Composed at the end of his life, Handel once again produced powerful, deeply touching music, alive with immense choruses.
