This year, the festival programme featuring more than fifty events will focus on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart under the motto of "The Silence in Between".

The International May Festival will be held from 30 April to 31 May 2019 under the artistic direction of Uwe Eric Laufenberg at the Hessian State Theatre in Wiesbaden. The various fields of the performing arts will be represented at the festival: opera and concert, dance and drama, from Baroque to modern, guest performances and gala evenings – the Hessian State Theatre in Wiesbaden will offer a varied programme for young and old.

Kick off with a Mozart Double

A Mozart Double has been scheduled for the grand opening held on two nights: "Idomeneo" and "La clemenza di Tito", directed by Uwe Eric Laufenberg and under the musical direction of Mozart specialist Konrad Junghänel, will put a spotlight on the world of Mozart’s operas in the initial stages as well as its end. As part of the festival’s focal point, a major Mozart event will be "Mozart24" put on stage on the first festival weekend. Mozart will be celebrated for 24 hours around-the-clock at the International May Festival, featuring music, spoken word, and excellent performing arts. A non-stop programme comprises opera performances, orchestral works, chamber music, songs interspersed with readings from famous biographies, novels, anthologies, surviving reviews and Mozart letters. New works will also be explored and performed.

Popular May Theatre Festival classics

Visitors to the traditional Wiesbaden May Theatre Festival can also expect a colourful bouquet of catchy, well-known pieces. That is why this year's programme will make the choice for theatregoers again quite difficult: "Idomeneo", "La clemenza di Tito", "Don Giovanni", "Salome", "Madama Butterfly", "Un ballo in maschera", "Tannhäuser", "The Master-Singers of Nuremberg", "Rigoletto" – plus, there will be drama, ballet, and special shows for young theatre fans.

The productions in the dance genre were from Israel, Norway and the Rhein-Ruhr part of Germany. The "Batsheva Dance Company", arriving with "Last Work" from Tel Aviv was performing in Wiesbaden for the first time.  The "Company zero visibility corp” from Oslo performed a close duet with rehearsal character with "…it’s only a rehearsal". Martin Schläpfer came to Wiesbaden with the choreography to Mahler’s Symphony No. "7". The exceptional International Maifestspiele programme harboured plenty of new elements, however not everything changed… Established formats such as the "Junge Woche" (Young Week) with international guest performances or the supporting film programme in the Caligari FilmBühne remained unchanged.
