Worth noting

Ljubljana has been declared a Green Capital of Europe 2016 and awarded the Tourism for Tomorrow 2015 prize. It is a very environmentally conscious city, a city with a green soul.

In 2014, the European Commission bestowed upon Ljubljana the prestigious title Green Capital of Europe for 2016 in recognition of the city’s "fostering of environmental consciousness of its citizens, its sustainability strategy "Vision 2025", the implementation of a number of urban greening measures over the past decade, and an exemplary public transport network".

Ljubljana’s transportation policy supports sustainable forms of mobility. In 2012, the core of the city was closed to passenger car traffic, and the city’s residents are taking more and more to bicycling. The city’s free bicycle rental system "Bicike (LJ)" is hugely popular.

Ljubljana is also using more and more methane-fuelled city buses, helping to reduce CO2 emissions. In the downtown pedestrian malls, electric cars called "Kavalier" transport people for short distances free of charge.

With its roughly 280,000 inhabitants Ljubljana is also a significant university town. More than 63,000 students are registered with the 23 faculties and three art academies of the city. The students shape life in the city and give it its young and lively personality.

A unique feature of Ljubljana is the 34 kilometre Trail of Remembrance and Comradeship, which follows the route of a barbed-wire fence that surrounded the city during World War II. More than 7,000 trees have been planted along the trail.
