Worth seeing

The city is famous for its many architectural monuments created by Jože Plečnik and its well-preserved, modern downtown area.

Though in many ways Ljubljana resembles an Austrian town, its architecture, mild climate, and numerous cafés along the river also give it a Mediterranean flair. Old town Ljubljana is completely under monument protection. The most famous landmarks designed by architect Jože Plečnik are the Three Bridges (Tromostovje), the Slovenian National Library, and Žale Cemetery, as well as the converted historical building complex "Križanke", Tivoli Park, and the autonomous youth and cultural centre Metelkova. Other impressive sites are St. Nikolaus Cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Slovenian National Gallery, and City Hall.

The market around the cathedral is worth a visit, especially on Saturdays, when there is also an arts flea market between the Three Bridges and the Cobbler’s Bridge (Čevljarski most).
