Glamping in the Rheingau

Gentle vineyards, sweeping views over the Rhine and small, hidden spots in the middle of nature - the Rheingau is perfect for a break in the countryside. And where to stay overnight? At Rheingau 524, for example. Julia Lange reveals what makes the experience in the 35 glamping barrels so unforgettable.

Miss Quellgeflüster: How did you come up with the idea for "Rheingau 524"?
Julia: The idea came from a desire to let people experience the Rheingau in a completely different way—close to nature, uncomplicated, yet cozy. Many of our guests love nature but don’t necessarily want to go camping in the traditional sense. That’s why we created a blend of the camping experience and comfortable accommodations—today, people would probably call it “glamping.”

The name "Rheingau 524" connects our home with a very personal place directly on the Rhine. The number 524 stands for the Rhine kilometer 524, where we are located in the Rheingau.

Fräulein Quellgeflüster: What kinds of accommodations do you offer?
Julia: We have sleeping barrels, shepherd’s huts, pods, and small lodges—each with its own unique charm. Our classic sleeping barrels are especially popular with couples who want to spend a cozy weekend in the Rheingau. Families often feel at home in the larger barrels or huts because there’s a bit more space there. For hikers or cyclists, the smaller trekking huts are perfect—simple, cozy, and surrounded by nature.

Many guests just like the mixture: being outside like when camping, but still sleeping in a real bed.

Miss Quellgeflüster: What about the restroom facilities?
Julia: It was important to us that even non-campers feel comfortable here. That’s why we’ve created modern, bright restroom facilities with individual showers, spacious wash areas, and plenty of room. Hair dryers are also available. Additionally, exclusive private bathrooms can be booked. These are equipped with their own toilet, shower, and sink. They’re especially in demand for longer stays or long weekends.

Fräulein Quellgeflüster: Who comes to stay with you? What’s the atmosphere like on the grounds?
Julia: Most of our guests actually don’t come from the traditional camping world at all. Many are usually hotel or vacation rental guests and are simply looking for a special getaway. The atmosphere here is quiet, relaxed, and close to nature. In the evenings, you sit outside, gaze at the Rhine with a glass of wine, and simply enjoy the special ambiance. That’s exactly what our guests appreciate most. That’s why we make a conscious effort to ensure it’s not a party spot.

The barrels are more than just a place to sleep - they are an invitation to experience the Rheingau in all its splendor. True to our motto: Because it's your time!

Miss Quellgeflüster: What is there to do in the area?
Julia: The Rheingau offers an incredible array of options. Many guests explore the vineyards on foot or by bike during the day, or go hiking. Others visit wineries, wine taverns, or take a boat trip along the Rhine. Castles, small historic towns, and boat tours are also popular. Some guests simply use Rheingau 524 as a base because we’re very centrally located between Rüdesheim am Rhein and Geisenheim, allowing them to discover the Rheingau at a leisurely pace—others deliberately choose to just sit back and enjoy the view of the Rhine for a day.

Fräulein Quellgeflüster: How long do your guests usually stay?
Julia: Most guests stay between two and four nights. Especially on weekends, many come for a short trip. At the same time, though, we often notice that once someone has been here, they usually stay longer on their next visit or even come back several times a year.

Fräulein Quellgeflüster: Do you have a personal favorite spot in the Rheingau?
Julia: There are many. We especially love the atmosphere by the water, as well as the sunrises and sunsets right on the Rhine. We also love the little paths above the vineyards with views across the Rhine—especially in the morning or evening, when the light is particularly special. It’s exactly this mix of nature, tranquility, and views that makes the Rheingau so unique to us.
