On the road in the ... Westend

The Westend is Wiesbaden's liveliest district. Vanessa Engeln from the "Schwarte" book café takes us to her favorite places!

Miss Quellgeflüster: Your book café, Schwarte, is a special place here in Westend ...

Vanessa: I really love that our audience is so diverse—we have kids coming in to pick up their books, students doing their homework here, families, college students, and book clubs that meet here. It’s a cross-section of all age groups. I think what we all have in common is a love of books.

Miss Quellgeflüster: What do you like about Westend?

Vanessa: The Westend is the warmest place in Wiesbaden—and also the most feminist :-) With its galleries, cafés, small shops, culture, and art, Wiesbaden really feels like home here!

Miss Quellgeflüster: Where do you like to spend your time?

Vanessa: I love the Art Nouveau buildings on Scharnhortstraße and Goebenstraße, the trees, and the Wellritz Valley. I love the “Hier & Jetzt” bakery (opens in a new tab) and café, exhibition spaces like Godot (opens in a new tab), the pop-up stores, the flea markets, and the neighborhood garden (opens in a new tab).

Miss Quellgeflüster: And what cultural events are there in Westend?

Vanessa: Small exhibitions, artists opening up their backyards to the public, readings and performances at the Emma Theater Workshop (opens in a new tab), and much more. I can’t take part in everything because I’m in my store so often ;-)

Quellgeflüster Tip: What was the “Volksbrausebad” during the Imperial Era? On the two-hour “Multikulti Westend” walking tour (opens in a new tab)“Multikulti Westend” walking tour (opens in a new tab), you’ll hear exciting (success) stories, get to know local luminaries, and take a look back at the history and behind the scenes of this neighborhood.
