The hate u give
The film adaptation of the award-winning young adult book "The hate u give" shows the life of a young African-American woman as a balancing act between two worlds and her experiences with everyday racism.
"Garden Heights is one world. Williamson is another. And I got to keep it separate. So when I'm here, I'm Starr version two. That means flipping a switch in my brain," is how Starr describes her life and many pupils can certainly identify with such a change of roles and the inner conflict that comes with it. The film also highlights the everyday racism that people of color are exposed to on a daily basis. These topics offer numerous opportunities for discussion in class, for example about the Black Lives Matter movement.
