IT scrap / disposal

The Media Centre organizes the disposal of IT electronic waste and offers data protection-compliant disposal of all types of data storage media.

Permissible scrap

Schools can independently arrange for the disposal of old school IT and audiovisual equipment if it:

are more than five years old AND
there is no doubt that they can no longer be used sensibly or recycled in the second-hand market.

If in doubt, our IT support team will be happy to advise you.

Furthermore, the ELW guidelines must be observed as to what may be recycled as electronic waste (opens in a new tab). In the event of non-compliance, a charge will be made for return transportation to the school.

Inventory

LHW inventory that cost more than EUR 410.01 net is inventoried at LHW. In this case, schools must therefore complete a form and send it to LHW's asset accounting department. The form can be found in the secretary's office or at the workstations of the school management on the public drive X and is called "Disposal due to scrapping...":

Please note that some individual devices such as monitors may be below the value limit, but may have been procured as a complete package. In this case, the devices are also inventoried and must be derecognized.

Help for completing:

Inventory stickers were sent to the school by LHW's asset accounting department for all devices that exceeded the above value limit. On these stickers you will find the asset number of the equipment to be entered on the form. If you are unable to determine the asset number, please enter the serial number as an alternative and note in the comments field that it is a serial number. Organizational matters for large appliances

The collection of very large, bulky equipment such as smartboards or very large displays is carried out by the ELW bulky waste service. This service collects devices from your school up to 4 times a year free of charge on an individual date. Accessories such as cables can remain on the device and are also disposed of. Schools can order this collection service themselves here. (opens in a new tab)

Organizational matters for small and medium-sized devices

Next pickup date	The next collection dates are April 20-22, 2026.
Registration of transports	Via the Media Center Secretariat up to 4 weeks before the date: via our contact form
Pickup location	Pickup is normally at the office. Other requests can be communicated.
Frequency	Usually once a year. Schools will be notified of the next dates in good time by email and they will be published on this page.
Times	Unfortunately, it is not possible to request a specific pick-up time. Therefore, please let us know the earliest and latest pick-up times so that the service provider is not left standing in front of closed doors. A telephone number is desirable.
Weight/size	We will transport anything that can be carried by two people without risk of injury.
Packaging	Small and medium-sized items should be placed loosely in a box, e.g., an old cardboard box or a moving box. The box should be easy to carry, similar to a moving box (weight, size, stability).
Cost	Free of charge for schools

Organizational matters for data carriers

Drop off at the media center at any time during normal opening hours. These are dropped directly into a special container provided by a certified waste disposal company.

By prior arrangement, it is also possible to drop them off at our branch office in the vocational school center or have them collected from your school by courier.

The costs are borne by the LHW education authority.
