In order to enable all teachers to participate in digital forms of teaching and working at school, mobile devices are available for loan to teachers thanks to federal funding.
In both face-to-face and distance learning, it is now important to have a digital device with which lessons can be prepared, followed up and conducted. Teachers' associations have also repeatedly called for teachers to be equipped with work devices.
In autumn 2020, the federal government therefore launched a 500 million funding program to equip teachers. The aim is to give everyone access to a digital work device, be it a tablet or a notebook.
Implementation in Wiesbaden
In February 2021, the Hessian Ministry of Culture, Education and Opportunities informed the school authorities about the initial framework conditions of the program and the amount of funding available and the devices available for selection. A few days later, the school board and the media center conducted a needs assessment at its schools.
iPads and notebooks have been delivered in full since mid-2021, with a total of around 3,000 end devices in Wiesbaden, roughly half iPads with pen and keyboard case and half Windows notebooks.
Support iPads
Support for the teacher iPads is provided by the media center's support team. Unlike with other school IT, teachers can contact the support team directly. The school IT officers should be relieved of this task as far as possible.
Teachers can contact the support team as follows
Phone
0611-16658-66
Mon. to Thurs. 8:00 to 16:00 Fri. 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Note: Please understand that we cannot provide support for individual apps and their use. We are also unable to support privately purchased iPads belonging to teachers, as these are not managed via the media center's mobile device management system.
Support Notebooks
Support for the Windows notebooks is provided by the Hesse-wide municipal service provider ekom21. It also manages the devices. For this purpose, ekom21 has commissioned Rednet AG from Mainz as a service provider. Information on the availability of support for the notebooks can be found on the inventory sticker on the back. As far as we know, support can be reached by telephone on 06131 25062710.
Rental formalities
The federal and state governments stipulate that the devices are assigned to the school and owned by the school authority. They are lent to teachers. The Hessian Ministry of Culture, Education and Opportunities has provided a sample loan agreement, which was adapted by the school authorities and media center and sent to the schools when the devices were delivered. It can also be downloaded from this page. It is mandatory for LHW schools. It includes a §11a in which schools can include school-specific regulations if necessary.
Since February 1, 2023, central usage guidelines of the Hessian Ministry of Culture, Education and Opportunities for teacher loan devices have also been in force, these can be found linked below. You will also find recommendations for using the iCloud on iPads.
Staff changes at the school
In the event of staff turnover in the school, the existing devices must be reset and re-lent. If the total number of devices available at a school is not sufficient, schools inform the LHW IT staff office and state the number of additional devices required. The media center currently has a reserve pool of devices for this purpose. However, if this pool is exhausted by the end of the state's equipment program, it will unfortunately not be possible to increase the number of devices.
