About us

"Wine dynasty" is how a renowned journalist once described the widely ramified Eser family, which has been known for its good wines in the Rheingau and especially in Oestrich since 1759. The August Eser winery, named after the grandfather of the current owner Désirée Eser Freifrau zu Knyphausen, is nestled in the historic center of Oestrich. Over 40 years of membership in the VDP as well as successes in wine competitions and awards are signs of a quality-oriented business. Strict quality measures and harvest reductions support this endeavor. Eleven hectares of vineyards are spread over a large number of classified individual sites of outstanding quality. The vineyards are located in eight Rheingau municipalities, from Rüdesheim to Oestrich and Rauenthal. The wine style is characterized by the fertile southern slopes along the Rhine with alluvial, slate, sand and loess loam soils. This diversity is a rarity and reflects the elegance and character of the classic Rheingau Riesling. Selective manual harvesting, gentle grape pressing and temperature-controlled fermentation guarantee aromatic and full-bodied wines. Combined ageing in wood and stainless steel has proven to be the best way to achieve this. The old wooden barrel cellar in the almost 300-year-old manor house (the oldest barrel dates back to 1898) is still in use and is a highlight for every visitor. Now in its 10th generation, Dodo and Désirée Freiherr and Freifrau zu Knyphausen are continuing the history of the winery in an innovative way and using traditional wine knowledge to vinify authentic and natural wines. In addition to the high-quality, predominantly dry wines, the wine range also includes their own bottle-fermented sparkling wines and Pinot Noir from the barrique.
