Favorite places in Wiesbaden: Irmgard Knopf - Goethestein
Irmgard Knopf would like to recommend one of her favorite places in Wiesbaden to you - the Goethe Stone in the lovely suburb of Frauenstein.
Goethe stone in Frauenstein
From this terrace, built in 1930, with its slender quartzite pyramid and a bronze portrait of Goethe, you can look out over the lovely landscape with forests, meadows, vineyards and cherry trees in lush bloom in spring. Further down the valley, the Rhine glistens, while on the other side of the Rhine you can see the vineyards of Rheinhessen with views as far as the Donnersberg in the Palatinate. The landscape changes with the seasons; fields of rapeseed in bloom between the lush green of the Taunus heights are a feast for the eyes.
In 1815, Goethe visited Wiesbaden for the second time for a cure. He often took friends with him in his carriage on his excursions into the surrounding area, including this time to tap quartzite stones for his mineral collection. This excursion was enhanced by the presence of his friends' lovely young daughters. To impress one of them in particular, he ran up the very steep vineyard at the age of almost 66 and stumbled ... but was caught by his servant Stadelmann.
Fortunately, the excursion came to a happy end at the "Nürnberger Hof" inn below the quartzite gallery, where the small party stopped for a glass of delicious 1811 Riesling. This wine was probably a very special vintage, as Goethe dedicated a poem to it.
It is still worth stopping for a drink on the large terrace. You can sit in the middle of the vineyards and enjoy the wonderful landscape and good wine and food. This popular excursion destination is very easy to reach, whether by bike, car or city bus or even on a hike.
