In the night hours of April 26, 2024, after the Kurpark was closed, a chestnut tree fell on one of the open lawns in the Wiesbaden Kurpark. There were no personal injuries.
The hazardous area was immediately secured the next morning by employees of the municipal TriWiCon, which is responsible for the operation of the Kurpark, and an expert office for tree services was commissioned to investigate the incident. Evidence was collected on site.
An initial assessment by the expert revealed that white rot had spread in the area of the structurally relevant root, which ultimately led to the failure of the tree's stability. Standing water could be detected at the bottom of the root ball at a depth of 1.5 meters. This could indicate that either the groundwater level at the tree location is very high or that there is a separating layer that prevents or severely restricts the seepage of rainwater. Such circumstances of permanent soaking can lead to the acceleration of rotting processes in the root area.
The cause of the rotting in the root area could not be conclusively clarified at present, as further investigations are required to verify the assumption. Detailed investigations, including search pits in the vicinity of the tree or directly in the area of the root plate, will be carried out over the next few weeks in order to finally clarify the cause.
As tree inspections have only recently been carried out and necessary arboricultural measures have been or will be carried out to ensure traffic safety, the report does not indicate any increased risk to visitors to the park.
On behalf of TriWiCon, tree appraisals are carried out at regular intervals by external experts to maintain traffic safety and the resulting tree care work is carried out to maintain the vitality of the trees in the Kurpark. A corresponding tree protocol therefore exists for each tree in the spa gardens. The tree in question was last inspected in December 2023, with the next inspection scheduled for September 2024. According to the protocol, no prioritized measures were identified in December 2023, meaning that road safety was deemed to be ensured.
The area in question is currently closed until further notice; the fallen tree is not causing any disruption to the paths. The Kurpark will be open from May 1 from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. (up to and including April 30, the Kurpark is open daily until 8 p.m.).
