Oranienschule

Oranienstraße 5 - 7

The Oranienschule is one of the city's oldest schools, founded as a Höhere Bürgerschule in 1857. The Municipal Architect Alexander Fach built the school between 1866 and 1868. Although the demise of the Duchy of Nassau was already two years past, the building was still designed in the structural forms of romantic Historicism and late Classicism. Felix Genzmer expanded the building in 1896-98 which, however, is not visible from the street. During a major attack on Wiesbaden in 1945, parts of the school building were destroyed; the school clock on the main building is a reminder of this day. At 20 minutes before midnight the hands came to a dead stop.
