On the road with ... the bike
For Nico Lange - presenter, speaker, podcaster and cycling ambassador - cycling means one thing above all: freedom! She has lived in Wiesbaden for 20 years, switched from bikes to e-bikes and from e-bikes to cargo bikes. Why we should all cycle more and where the best places are in Wiesbaden!
Fräulein Quellgeflüster: What do you like about cycling?
Nico: The feeling of happiness I get from it. I get on, ride off and get everywhere super fast. I meet other cyclists at the traffic lights and have little conversations with them, I can smell the seasons and I like this immediate feeling of being right in the middle of our city!
Fräulein Quellgeflüster: What do you do on your bike?
Nico: Simply everything - and in almost any weather! I still have a small car, but I rarely use it in city traffic because I'm just so much faster on my bike. I grew up in the north, where cycling was the most natural thing in the world. Even when I lived in Cologne, I cycled everywhere, just like my grandparents did until the end of their lives. When I moved to Wiesbaden, my bike was only in the cellar. I then bought an e-bike 14 years ago. There were few or no cycle paths back then. When Corona came along, I started the podcast "Wiesbaden radelt", in which I talk to people who enjoy cycling. I see myself as an ambassador who wholeheartedly encourages everyone to cycle in this city! Of course, the city is also "cycled" with visitors. Everyone is amazed at how beautiful it is here and what you can discover in a short space of time. The message has arrived!
Fräulein Quellgeflüster: Wiesbaden is not exactly bike-friendly due to its many hills ...
Nico : No problem with an e-bike! And you can also ride without assistance. Apart from that, Wiesbaden is virtually predestined for cycling: 3.6 kilometers from the Nerobergbahn to the train station and five kilometers from there to the banks of the Rhine!
Fräulein Quellgeflüster: Where do you prefer to cycle?
Nico: It's just great to roll through the neighborhoods! I also like the back part of the Kurpark with its villas and parakeets. And the tour up to the Neroberg or down to the Rhine ... Biebricher Allee and the Ringen are also great places to cycle.
Fräulein Quellgeflüster: Do you have a favorite tour?
Nico: From the market square up Taunusstraße to Nerotal, then down the other side of the park, past the Kurhaus, up Parkstraße, down Sonnenberg. Along Wilhelmstraße, then through the Rheingau district or my beloved Westend. Just drift along and always stop exactly where you see something beautiful!
Fräulein Quellgeflüster: And in the surrounding area?
Nico: My favorite place to go is Eltville. Up Biebricher Allee, then to Schierstein harbor, through the nature reserve with the storks and then stop at the wine tasting stand in Walluf. Continue to Eltville. The route is flat and a cycle path throughout.
