Why Wiesbaden?
8 reasons why a short trip to Wiesbaden is a great idea.
Although Wiesbaden, with its 300,000 inhabitants, is not the largest city in Hesse - that place is occupied by Frankfurt with around 750,000 inhabitants - it is the state capital of Hesse. Incidentally, Mainz, the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate, is located directly opposite the Rhine.
- Wiesbaden is the perfect size for exploring on foot.
- Overtourism? We don’t know what that is. Here, you can explore at your own pace.
- Wiesbaden is a paradise for architecture and photography enthusiasts: During the Wilhelminian era, the city experienced a veritable construction boom, and since Wiesbaden was barely damaged during World War II, there are still many beautiful buildings and villas from the Historicist period.
- Wiesbaden is incredibly green. The highlight is the Kurpark with its old trees. Perhaps that’s why the exotic ring-necked and Alexandrine parakeets, which you’ll encounter all over the city, feel so at home here.
- As the “City of Springs,” Wiesbaden has a long tradition as a spa town. There are a total of 26 hot springs, which also supply the thermal baths. You can relax in a particularly beautiful atmosphere at the Badhaus (opens in a new tab) and the Kaiser-Friedrich-Thermen (opens in a new tab).
- Wiesbaden is a city for connoisseurs: cafés, chocolate shops, wine bars, and restaurants—you’ll be spoiled for choice!
- Culture lovers can take full advantage—in addition to major venues, there are many hidden gems, such as these small cabaret stages (opens in a new tab).
- Wiesbaden is the perfect base for exploring the beautiful Rheingau (opens in a new tab) with its castles, wineries, monasteries, and restaurants. You’ll be there in just half an hour!
