“Autumn Leaves” is a version of a multi-part work adapted for the Kunsthaus, now being presented in Germany for the first time: “Witnesses (Bones, Leaves and other creatures)” was created in 2022 for the Busan Biennale in South Korea. In it, the artist explores the history of a labor camp in Busan where severe human rights violations took place—violations that have not yet been adequately addressed.

The stories of a survivor served as inspiration for the sculptures and the wall tapestry, particularly his perception of the trees on the camp grounds. For him, the leaves of the trees symbolized freedom and hope.

Grace Schwindt colored the ceramic glazes of the sculptures using soil and leaves from the trees at the site. The sculptures allow viewers to comprehend, in a moving way, both the vulnerability and the resilience of the human body and spirit.
