The cemeteries at the Hauptkirche and on the Kappenberg served as
precursors to today’s cemetery, which is located above the railroad line leading to Biebricher Berg. The parishes of Biebrich and Mosbach, which were formerly administered independently of one another, likely shared the cemetery at the Hauptkirche as early as before 1066. The cemetery on Kappenberg was opened in 1785, but its capacity was soon exhausted due to the fallen soldiers of the war of 1792–93. After the burial rights for the graves had expired, the area of the Kappenberg cemetery was redeveloped.

In 1855, the current Biebrich Cemetery was opened. The funeral hall and the other buildings were not added until 1891, following several expansions that made the Biebrich Cemetery the third-largest in Wiesbaden in terms of area. Starting in 1904, the site was intentionally developed into a scenic park cemetery. Many prominent Wiesbaden figures from the fields of science, the arts, business, the church, and politics also found their final resting place here. Incidentally, the very first urn burial in the Wiesbaden metropolitan area took place here in 1897. Due to the cemetery’s long history of use, there are inevitably some graves designated as historic monuments, and visitors are welcome to sponsor them.
