The cemetery, established in 1836 south of the town, was expanded repeatedly over time, making it impossible to recognize the site’s original character. From a historic preservation perspective, therefore, only a few individual structures on the grounds—and, of course, the burial site of the Counts of Hatzfeldt-Wildenburg—are of significance today. The cemetery’s former exclusively Catholic affiliation is evident in the red sandstone and cast-iron cemetery cross, which was erected in the 1850s.

Not far from it stands the memorial to those who fell in World War I, a small, classical-style tomb, also crafted from red sandstone. A particularly atmospheric area in the older part of the cemetery is indeed the burial site of the Counts of Hatzfeldt-Wildenburg, which is flanked by large yew trees and is visible from afar. Buried here, among others, is Sophie Countess von Hatzfeldt-Wildenburg-Schönstein, a prominent socialist and the partner of Ferdinand Lasalle.
