Given Kastel’s long history of settlement, it’s only to be expected that our oldest suburb would have a well-established burial tradition. The predecessor to today’s cemetery was located around St. George’s Church on Rochusplatz starting in the 16th century. Even a section of the plague wall, which was once used to isolate the sick from the healthy, is still preserved. However, by the end of the 18th century, the cemetery had already been relocated to Boelckestraße.

About half of the cemetery’s current area is designated as a historic site. This includes three sections located south and southwest of the funeral hall, as well as the so-called “Ehrenfeld” (Field of Honor). In these areas, special regulations regarding design apply to new graves, and existing graves may only be redesigned or altered with approval under heritage preservation laws.

These include historic tombs of great art-historical significance, whose preservation is costly and for which sponsorships are being sought. As an exception, burials at the Kastel Cemetery take place exclusively in deep ground graves. The deep graves, just like the 20-year burial period, date back to a time when the “Casseler” (the residents of Kastel) still looked to Mainz for guidance.
