It was not until the 20th century that the cemetery, along with its grave monuments, was relocated from Kostheimer Hauptstraße to Mittlerer Sampelweg and significantly expanded to its current size of 39 hectares. As in Kastel, burials at the Kostheim Cemetery take place exclusively in deep ground graves; the types of graves were also modeled after the customs of the Diocese of Mainz.
Commemorative plaques from World War I are mounted on a wall of the funeral hall, which is connected to the entrance area in the southeastern corner of the cemetery grounds. Right next to it is a memorial field for those who fell in World War II.
The following types of graves are available at the Mainz-Kostheim Cemetery:
· Chosen burial plot (deep grave)
· Single-grave plot for children
· Row burial plot for children
· Customized lawn urn burial plot
The cemetery
has existed since 1935 and
covers an area
of 38,957 m²
