In 1853 and 1854, the Nordenstadt Cemetery was relocated from the town center near the church to its current location further north on the outskirts of town. Its boundaries were slightly expanded eastward in 1937, northward in 1966, and westward around 1977. Nevertheless, the layout of the cemetery—with a longitudinal and a transverse path serving as its main axes—remained intact.
The historic preservation authorities focus here on features that reflect the local history or its evolution in a manner typical of their respective eras. One such feature is the old perimeter wall made of Hochheim limestone, dating from 1855 and 1937, with its original gateposts of red sandstone. Also worth noting are a cast-iron pump that drew water from the well dug in 1903, the granite war memorial honoring those who fell in World War I, and the former mortuary with its particularly delicate supporting structure.
This architectural monument was designed and built in 1952 outside the northern boundary wall according to plans by Meireis, a structural engineer from Breckenheim. Today, the building is once again located within the cemetery grounds and effectively dominates the main axis.
