SVWW Hosts Leverkusen in the DFB Cup
SVWW will once again compete in the 3. Liga during the 2026–27 season. The season is only two matchdays old, yet a sense of disillusionment has already set in around the Brita-Arena, as the team suffered decisive losses in its first two games. Now, on Saturday, August 22, Bayer Leverkusen is coming to Wiesbaden for a cup match.
First Round of the Cup against Leverkusen
And after what has been a very lackluster start to the season so far, Bayer Leverkusen will visit the Brita-Arena on Saturday, August 22, at 1 p.m. for the first round of the DFB Cup. Based on their performances so far, SVWW enters the match as a massive underdog against the 2024 German champion and cup winner. After the game in Würzburg, one can only hope that the team doesn’t get completely run over by Bayer. At the very least, the arena should be well-attended. Once again, it’s set to be a soccer celebration in the capital of Hesse.
Whether there will be a reunion with Robert Andrich, however, is questionable. Bayer has informed the (former) national team player—who played for SVWW from 2016 to 2018—that he will see very little playing time this season. This could lead to a quick transfer.
SVWW will still be without injured captain Hübner, but otherwise all players are available. There certainly won’t be many changes; Brandt might once again be preferred over Suarez. Otherwise, Würzburg’s starting lineup has a chance to redeem itself.
Possible setups
SVWW: Stritzel - Gillekens, Lewald, Janitzek - Hercher, Brandt, Gözüsirin, Greilinger - Ati Allah, Karweina - Flotho - Coach Scherning
Bayer: Flekken – Vazquez, Badé, Tapsoba, Miguel – E. Fernandez, Aleix Garcia – Maza, Tillman, Moreira – Schick – Coach Martinez
0-4 in the away game in Würzburg
On the second matchday, Wiesbaden traveled to face newly promoted Kickers Würzburg. Coach Scherning made one change from the 1-3 loss to Münster, bringing in Suarez for Brandt. Wiesbaden got off to a strong start, squandering two early chances through Flotho and Karweina. After that, the hosts found their rhythm, and Wiesbaden didn’t really have much to offer. In the 17th minute, the former Wiesbaden player scored the 1-0 for the Kickers from Würzburg with a magnificent free kick, completely turning the tide of the game. And after another chance, it was Kraus who deservedly finished to make it 2–0 for Würzburg. The hosts had SVWW firmly under control, and the 2–0 lead at halftime was well deserved.
Although Wiesbaden’s effort was evident, the home team had the first chance of the second half, but Bonga missed. SVWW had another opportunity just past the one-hour mark through Gillekens, but goalkeeper Hipper prevented them from cutting the deficit. And at the 77-minute mark, the game was decided. After a mistake by goalkeeper Stritzel, Kiefersauer pounced to make it 3–0. And with six minutes remaining, it was Franjic again who scored his second goal to extend the lead to 4–0. SVWW had to leave the field with a heavy defeat and currently sits in 20th and last place in the standings with no points.

Home game against Essen
League play resumes on Saturday, August 29, at 2 p.m. with a home game. The visitors to Wiesbaden will be none other than Rot-Weiss Essen, who nearly earned promotion last season—another tough match for SVWW.
Ole Wohlers is also leaving
SV Wehen Wiesbaden and Ole Wohlers have mutually agreed to terminate his contract. As a result, the 26-year-old and SVWW are parting ways effective immediately.
Ayoub Chaikhoun is from Nuremberg
SVWW has secured the services of Ayoub Chaikhoun. The 20-year-old midfielder, who was born in Frankfurt, is joining SVWW on a one-year loan from second-division club 1. FC Nürnberg.
