Dirk Reinartz: work comes out of work
On June 6, the exhibition "work comes out of work" with photographs by Dirk Reinartz on the creation of sculptures by Richard Serra will open at the Museum Wiesbaden. It can be seen there until September 14.
Richard Serra (1938 - 2024) is one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century. His monumental steel sculptures characterize today's landscapes and urban spaces. The German photographer and photojournalist Dirk Reinartz (1947-2004) traveled around the world for many years to record Serra's sculptures in photographs. The exhibition "work comes out of work" at the Museum Wiesbaden brings together 125 photographs by Dirk Reinartz on the work of Richard Serra. They are snapshots of the creative process, artfully captured moments of light and shadow and documents of Richard Serra's life's work.
"The factories and steelworks are my extended studio"
With these words, Richard Serra refers to the processes required to create his often large-scale sculptures. A complex, energy-intensive and labor-intensive process in heavy industry takes the place of solitary artistic handiwork. Unique works of art emerge from industrial collaboration, and it is not uncommon for the confrontation with industrial working methods to lead to new works: work comes out of work.
About Dirk Reinartz
Dirk Reinartz (1947 to 2004) accompanied the creation and construction of Serra's sculptures photographically over many years. The resulting images go far beyond mere documentation and develop a pictorial quality of their own. Reinartz's subtly graduated black and white photography captures the special atmosphere in the rolling mill, the forge and the industrial processing without aiming for superficial effects. The exhibition is a project of the Situation Kunst Foundation, Bochum. Accompanying the presentation, the Museum Wiesbaden is showing a room with sculptural works and large-format oil chalk works by Richard Serra.
