The Mithras relief from the Nassau Antiquities Collection
Dr. Daniel Burger Völlmecke
The discovery of two temples dedicated to the Roman god Mithras in 1826 in the Nassau district of Frankfurt-Heddernheim, the Roman town of Nida, caused quite a stir. It suddenly made the Nassau Antiquarian and Historical Society famous far beyond the borders of Nassau. The structures were the first Mithras temples north of the Alps to be discovered to date. In addition to the numerous inscribed stones, the rotating Mithras cult image was undoubtedly one of the most spectacular finds. To this day, it remains one of the outstanding highlights of the Nassau Antiquities Collection.
The lecture provides an insight into the circumstances surrounding the discovery, explains the significance of the two Mithras temples and the cult image for Mithras research, and also offers an introduction and overview of the Mithras cult.
The lecture will take place in the Marktkeller as part of the Wiesbaden Cultural Initiative. Admission is free.
