International May Festival: Plácido Domingo
As part of the International May Festival 2026, the Spanish singer Plácido Domingo will perform in an exclusive gala recital in the main auditorium of the Hessisches Staatstheater on 19 May.
In addition to the great arias of his repertoire, particularly those by Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini, Domingo also devotes himself to the musical genre that has been particularly close to his heart since childhood: the zarzuela, the "Spanish operetta". Born in Madrid as the son of two zarzuela singers, Domingo grew up with this music. At the Staatstheater Wiesbaden, he presents the highlights of this genre in a particularly approachable format that brings out its artistic expressiveness: instead of a large orchestra, he is accompanied by a pianist on the piano for an immediate, chamber music concert experience.
Plácido Domingo is a successful tenor singer and, since 2009, baritone singer and conductor and is celebrated by audiences and critics worldwide. His concerts with José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti as "The Three Tenors" are legendary. In addition to more than 150 opera roles, Domingo is also a pioneer of crossover and winner of 12 Grammys. He has been awarded honorary titles and prestigious prizes, particularly for his humanitarian work. As a promoter of young singing talent, Domingo founded the Operalia singing competition. He is also a global ambassador for Spanish culture and zarzuela.
The evening will be accompanied by James Vaughan on the piano. The Irish pianist has long been regarded as one of Europe's leading solo concert accompanists and singing teachers.
