Proclamation of the town twinning Wiesbaden - Ocotal
On May 16, 1990, a delegation from Ocotal signed the Golden Book of the City of Wiesbaden.
The city of Ocotal is located in the department of Nueva Segovia, around 225 kilometers from the Nicaraguan capital of Managua. It was founded in 1780 as Nueva Reducción de Segovia and today has around 33,000 inhabitants.
In the 1920s, Ocotal was the stronghold of the army of guerrilla leader Augusto César Sandino, which led to one of the first air raids by the United States during the occupation.
The economy of the region, which is characterized by imposing mountains and large rainforests, is currently based mainly on the cultivation of coffee and tobacco.
On May 16, 1990, a delegation from the city that had traveled around 9,000 kilometers was welcomed at Wiesbaden City Hall. After an exchange of friendly declarations, the town twinning was sealed. The guests then signed the city's Golden Book.
