Blue tit on feeding roll

Fancy making a winter feeding station for birds? And watch the birds feeding? Then go ahead:

1. you need:

  • an empty toilet roll
  • coconut oil or peanut butter for garden birds (you can buy these in garden centers or pet shops, for example - be careful not to use normal peanut butter, it is too salty and contains roasted peanuts - not good for the birds)
  • a bag of raisins and a bag of sunflower seeds (or a ready-made winter bird food mix)
  • a knife for spreading
  • string

2. the preparation

  • Place the coconut oil on a large flat plate and put it on the heat for a while - it will soften up nicely! If you want to use the peanut butter for garden birds, you only need to unscrew the jar.
  • In the meantime, fill another plate with the raisins
    and sunflower seeds.

3. lubrication and rolling

  • Now use a knife to smear your toilet roll with a nice thick layer of coconut oil or peanut butter for garden birds!
  • Then roll the greased roll through the raisin and sunflower seed plate - until a lot of food sticks to the roll.

4. hanging and observing

  • Now you can hang the roll with the cord directly from a branch
outside. Or you can insert a stick and knot the cord to both sides of the stick - as shown in the picture.
  • It is best not to hang the roll directly in front of the window, but in such a way that it hangs freely. This prevents enemies, such as domestic cats, from sneaking up unnoticed. Nevertheless, trees and bushes in the area should not be missing as a place of retreat.

Your winter feeding station is ready. And now have fun watching the birds!

By the way: You can also use a large pine cone instead of the toilet roll and press the mixture between the individual scales - give it a try!
