Climate education landscapes

The Hessian Climate Education Landscapes - KBL for short - of the Hessian Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment are a central measure of the Hessian Climate Plan in the area of education and research. The aim is to structurally anchor climate protection and sustainability in municipal ESD educational landscapes.

Climate education landscape Wiesbaden: Together for climate protection and education

The Wiesbaden Climate Education Landscape is a project run by the Hessian Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment in cooperation with the state capital of Wiesbaden. The central goal of climate education is to make knowledge about climate protection and dealing with climate change accessible to everyone. For this to succeed, cooperation between many different parties is needed: from education, local government, administration, science, business, and civil society. In Wiesbaden, the Climate Education Landscape Coordination Office specifically promotes exchange and networking among these actors. The aim is to permanently anchor climate protection and climate change adaptation in the municipal education landscape in the spirit of education for sustainable development (ESD).

The term "education landscape" symbolizes a vibrant network of learning locations, educational opportunities, and committed people – similar to how a natural landscape consists of many interconnected elements. In Wiesbaden, this is creating an education landscape in which existing opportunities, initiatives, and projects related to climate protection and climate adaptation are made visible, strengthened, and further developed. New educational partnerships are intended to complement these in a meaningful way. In this context, the establishment of network and cooperation structures, educational opportunities, and public events are planned. In Wiesbaden, there is a particular focus on sustainable nutrition through climate-friendly gardening – with and without a garden.

Five climate education landscapes will be created throughout Hesse by mid-2028: in Wiesbaden, Frankfurt am Main, the Vogelsberg district, the Marburg-Biedenkopf region, and the city of Kassel and its surrounding area. They are a central measure of the Hesse Climate Plan in the field of education and research. Each climate education landscape is coordinated by a regional, ESD-certified institution on behalf of or in cooperation with the Hesse Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment. The coordination office for the Wiesbaden climate education landscape is located in the Fasanerie Nature Education Center. The coordination office for the Wiesbaden ESD network is also located there, serving as an established starting point for the new climate education landscape.

In order to create a climate education landscape in Wiesbaden where climate protection and climate adaptation measures can be experienced, the project managers invite all interested parties to network and jointly develop innovative projects for climate education in line with ESD.
