In 1853 and 1854, Nordenstadt cemetery was moved from the town center near the church to its current location further north on the outskirts of the town. Its dimensions were extended slightly to the east in 1937, to the north in 1966 and to the west in 1977. Nevertheless, the structure of the complex, consisting of a longitudinal and a transverse path as the main axes, was retained.
The preservation of monuments here is concerned with evidence that reflects the local history or its changes. One of these is the old enclosing wall made of Hochheim limestone from 1855 and 1937 with its original gateposts made of red sandstone. There is also a cast-iron pump that pumped water from the well dug in 1903, the granite war memorial commemorating the fallen of the First World War and the former mortuary with its particularly delicate support.
The latter monument was planned and built outside the northern enclosure in 1952 according to plans by the Breckenheim civil engineer Meireis. Today, the building is once again located within the grounds and effectively dominates the main axis.
