How to achieve peaceful coexistence
These few basic rules must be observed for peaceful coexistence with wasps.
Rules of conduct in the vicinity of a wasp nest
- Keep a safe distance of approx. 1-2 m from the nest
- Do not block the flight path to the entrance hole
- Move quietly and slowly
- Do not shake the nest area, do not operate motorized lawn mowers near the nest (exhaust fumes)
- Protect patio doors and windows with flutter tapes and fly wire
Outdoor precautions
- Avoid strong fragrances in hairspray and perfume as they attract wasps
- Spread lemon slices studded with cloves around the area, wasps avoid this scent
- Cover food and drinks and drink from straws
- Distract wasps by feeding them with ripe fruit (especially sliced grapes). Tip: It takes some time for the wasps in the immediate vicinity to adjust to the feeding area. You should therefore ensure that the feeding site is regularly replenished. Start setting up a feeding station at least a week before garden parties.
- Keep a few pesky wasps "quiet" in an upturned glass jar until they are later released
- Cover baby carriages with light-colored tulle curtains and clean children's smeared mouths more often
- Be careful when walking barefoot on grass
Do not swat at wasps or blow them away. It is better to have a sprayer with water ready and spray flying animals with it. This keeps the animals away from the "rain area" for a certain period of time and does not make the animals aggressive.
Wasp traps
Many other insects also die an agonizing death in "wasp traps" in which the animals are supposed to drown. In addition, unspecific insect trapping outdoors is prohibited by the Federal Nature Conservation Act. Unfortunately, such traps are still freely available for purchase.
