Asian hornet: Removal of a nest

The Asian hornet has become increasingly widespread in Wiesbaden. Nests can be expected in all areas of the city.
Especially in densely populated areas, Asian hornet nests can lead to unpleasant clashes, as these are vigorously defended by the workers.

The larger the nest becomes, the more difficult it is to remove.

Given the early onset of warm weather, it is likely that initial nests are already being built or will be established shortly. If you discover such a nest, the Wasp and Hornet Advisory Service at the Environmental Office recommends contacting them at landschaftsschutzwiesbadende to coordinate any further steps.

Upon submission of photographic evidence, the advisory service can assist in identifying the species and provide contacts to professionally trained companies and individuals who can be commissioned to remove nests. At the same time, reporting the sighting with photographic evidence can prevent confusion with the specially protected native hornet. The Environmental Office asks that you refrain from reporting sightings of individual insects away from nests.

You do not need a permit under species protection laws to remove a nest. As a rule, there is no mandatory legal obligation to remove nests. However, the costs of nest removal must be borne by the owners of the affected properties themselves.

If you have discovered a nest not on your own property but in a public area, the Environmental Agency also asks that you report it so that the property management authority can be made aware of the find.

Nest findings can and should also be reported via the State of Hesse’s reporting portal to support monitoring efforts for this species.
