Flora and fauna in the outdoor area
Wiesbaden is a city with precious open spaces that provide a habitat for numerous animal and plant species - both inside and outside the built-up area. The Environmental Agency has spent three years examining the open landscape and making detailed statements about the animal and plant species living there.
In order to avoid having to examine the entire outdoor area, 33 areas were selected that are representative of the Wiesbaden landscape. The data from these reference areas can be transferred to comparable areas. For the first time, a systematic mapping of the animals and plants living in the urban area was carried out. The report shows the mapping methods, provides general evaluations of the flora and fauna as well as area-related descriptions and assessments of the individual survey areas.
It is a basic survey for updating the landscape plan at land use plan level. The study maps the current situation of species occurrence as a basis for later surveys. Finally, a basis is available that makes changes measurable. The information on endangered and rare animal and plant species is of particular interest.
Over 700 plant species were mapped in all the areas surveyed. Of these, 18 are protected by law, 22 species are considered endangered and 42 are classified as requiring conservation. The animals were recorded using six selected animal species groups. Both protected species and regional peculiarities were identified.
