Environmental tip for April: How to stop the Asian tiger mosquito on your doorstep
It is tiny, black and white striped and is now also widespread in Wiesbaden. The Asian tiger mosquito is very keen to bite and can transmit tropical diseases.
However, there is no need for excessive panic: there are currently no known cases in this country of the disease being transmitted through a bite. Experts believe, however, that due to climate change, it is only a matter of time. With rising temperatures and milder winters, the Asian tiger mosquito is spreading across Europe. Even the smallest pools of water—such as on a balcony, terrace, or in the garden—are sufficient for them to breed.
A simple rule helps: no standing water
- Empty water once a week: Empty flower pots, saucers, planters, and bird baths, and rinse them briefly. This will help prevent new mosquitoes.
- Store containers dry or upside down: Watering cans, buckets, wheelbarrows, or toys can collect rainwater. If stored upside down or kept dry, they won’t become breeding grounds.
- Cover rain barrels: Open rain barrels are ideal breeding grounds. A lid or fine-mesh net prevents eggs from being laid.
- Check gutters and drains: Clogged gutters or drains can also collect water. Regular cleaning helps prevent breeding sites.
- Clean even in fall and winter: Scrub buckets, coasters, and similar containers with hot water at the end of the season. This removes overwintering eggs.
If water in open containers or rain barrels cannot be avoided
- Bti tablets are effective. They contain a natural soil bacterium that specifically targets mosquito larvae. They are considered safe for humans, pets, and plants.
- Available free of charge at City Hall, many local administrative offices, and the Wiesbaden Environmental Store at Luisenstraße 19. You can also get advice on how to use them there.
