The Wiesbaden Environmental Award recognizes commitment!

During a ceremonial event in the Grand Ballroom of City Hall, the state capital presented the 2026 Environmental Award on International Environment Day (June 5). Mayor and Head of the Environment Department Christiane Hinninger honored three initiatives that have made an exceptional contribution to nature conservation, environmental protection, and sustainable engagement in urban society. The award not only recognizes the winning projects but also sends a clear signal about the broad-based commitment to environmental responsibility in the city.

Winning Projects 2026

1st prize: ArtenGarten Komponistenviertel Wiesbaden

The “ArtenGarten Wiesbaden Komponistenviertel” project promotes biodiversity by redesigning garden spaces to be more natural. Garden owners are removing ecologically problematic, non-native ornamental plants and replacing them with native species that bloom year-round.

before - after: the ArtenGarten in the composers' quarter

The introduction of structurally rich elements creates habitats and food sources for animals, such as the Aesculapian snake. Within a short time, numerous new animal, plant, and fungal species settle in—some of which are protected species on the Red List. By collecting rainwater and using recycled materials, the project also contributes to climate and resource conservation.

2nd prize: Thinking with your hands - the workbench as a creative place of learning and sustainability in the daycare center

Workbench for children at the St. Andreas daycare center

The St. Andreas Daycare Center has set up a child-friendly workbench where staff and children can work together to repair, spruce up, and creatively repurpose furniture and play equipment. This allows existing items to be used for longer, rather than buying new ones. This conserves resources, prevents waste, and reduces CO₂ emissions. The children learn in a hands-on way how to use materials sustainably and develop an awareness of the environment and resources.

3rd prize: Closing the Loop: EVE + OLIVE develops baby clothes in a circular system

sustainable clothing from Eve & Olive

EVE + OLIVE designs sustainable baby clothing made from innovative cellulose fibers, specifically the eco-friendly material Tencel™ Lyocell. Production takes place using a resource-efficient, closed-loop process that conserves water and energy. A distinctive feature of the collection is its thoughtful design: The clothing is made from a single material, is exceptionally durable, and, thanks to smart cuts, grows with the child across multiple sizes.
