Drinking water protection areas have been designated in Wiesbaden. These protected areas each cover the entire catchment area of a water extraction plant. A water extraction facility is, for example, a well or tunnel from which groundwater is extracted. The protection requirements increase as the catchment area is approached.

Drinking water protection areas are subdivided as follows:

Zone I (catchment area)

In this area around the water catchment system (up to approx. 50 m) and in its immediate
surrounding area must not be contaminated in any way. Land use of any kind is therefore not permitted.
is therefore not permitted.

Zone II (narrower protection zone)

As a rule, this zone is delimited in such a way that the flow time of the groundwater from the outermost edge of the
edge of the protection zone to the catchment is at least 50 days. This ensures that the water is
microbiologically purified.

Zone III (further protection zone)

As a rule, it is extended to the boundary of the catchment area and thus covers the entire groundwater flowing into the catchment.
