Solar systems on listed buildings
Monuments make their contribution to climate protection and are essential building blocks of sustainable urban development. In this context, it naturally makes sense to clarify how our architectural heritage can be made fit for climate change and the energy transition.
Solar installations on listed buildings - is that even possible?
Yes, at least in most cases. In principle, however, a permit under monument protection law must first be obtained before solar energy systems (photovoltaic or solar thermal systems) or so-called balcony solar energy systems can be installed on or on buildings within cultural monuments, protected complexes and on or on individual cultural monuments.

The requirements for solar energy systems eligible for approval
The Hesse State Office for Monument Preservation has published a guide for solar installations on listed buildings in Hesse [Solar installations on listed buildings | denkmal.hessen.de]. The brochure (only available digitally) serves as a working aid for all those involved in the topic, i.e. monument owners, planning offices and contractors, but also the monument protection authorities, in order to develop solutions for solar systems on listed buildings that are compatible with the preservation of monuments.
This guide is intended to support you as the owner of a listed building in obtaining approval, insofar as the requirements of monument protection permit it. We therefore recommend that you contact us and seek advice as soon as you are considering installing a solar system. The consultation is free of charge.
