Guide to façade design
In recent years, the state capital of Wiesbaden has made progress in upgrading the city center through various public space and building construction projects.
Wiesbaden's city center has an almost complete historical development. The urban layout tells of the political, social and urban planning ideas of the respective eras: From the small-scale structure of the 17th century to the major interventions in the 1970s and 1980s, such as the development of department store buildings. Today, the state capital of Wiesbaden focuses on maintaining and preserving the cityscape and enhancing the quality of life in the sense of a vibrant city. A high level of investment, great commitment and a corresponding standard of quality have been used to achieve this. This is to be continued in the future.
The aim of urban development: preserving and shaping history
It is in the common interest of politics, retail, monument preservation (opens in a new tab) and urban development to strengthen the "historical flair" and the design quality of the city centre as a core and crystallization point.
In addition to the redesign of the public space and important city squares, the state capital of Wiesbaden is also working towards a high design quality of the building facades and thus towards a cohesive, unmistakable cityscape. Due to contemporary perceptions of the requirements of trade and commerce, the building as a whole has been lost sight of in recent decades when designing the shopping area. In some cases, this has led to an unsatisfactory overall effect that is not in harmony with the historic building fabric. This refers to disproportionate shop window formats, protruding canopies and awnings, oversized advertising, etc.
Holistic view of the building design
The aim is now to take a holistic view of the high-quality architectural and design appearance of a building and to restore it. The guide to façade design developed for this purpose invites people to take a closer look at the quality of the historic building fabric in the city center, also in order to be able to assess the influence of current changes on the built cityscape and to contribute to the public debate. The aim is to encourage the population and, in particular, owners, tenants and business owners to participate in the design of the urban space and to incorporate the urban heritage more strongly into their design intentions.
