Ground-breaking ceremony for the first construction phase of the Schlossplatz redesign
Work on the redesign of Wiesbaden's Schlossplatz in the area in front of the Marktkirche church officially began with a ground-breaking ceremony on Thursday, September 4.
The state capital is thus implementing the resolution passed by the city council in February 2024 to make the central square fit for the future.
Schlossplatz is one of the most historically and socially significant places in Wiesbaden: surrounded by the Marktkirche church, the city palace with the state parliament, the New Town Hall and the Old Town Hall, it has been the political, religious and social center of the city for centuries. The redesign will not only upgrade the square functionally and ecologically, but also future-proof it as a lively stage for festivals, meetings and public life in Wiesbaden.
Ecological and sustainable quality are particularly important in the redesign: with new tree quarters, rainwater utilization and a well thought-out soil replacement, healthy conditions are being created so that the new trees can grow in the long term. In this way, the dual function of the Schlossplatz as a quiet zone in everyday life and as a center for Wiesbaden's major festivals is ensured.
First construction phase by summer 2027
In the first construction phase, which is scheduled to last until summer 2027, the municipal civil engineering and surveying office will implement the following measures, among others:
- Creation of an organized surface drainage system and construction of a rainwater cistern to irrigate the new tree quarters
- Planting new trees with a significantly enlarged underground root zone
- Laying new electricity, water and wastewater pipes including modern underground connections for festivals and events
- Equipping with natural stone paving in a segmental arch pattern for a uniform overall appearance
- Creation of new recreational areas with seating in the tree groves.
The city council has made a total of 4.5 million euros available for the first construction phase. The length of the construction period is due in particular to archaeological investigations, monument preservation requirements, the parallel use for major events and the need to investigate explosive ordnance. Work will be interrupted for several weeks for the Sternschnuppenmarkt and the Rheingau Wine Week. The start of construction was deliberately scheduled for after the wine festival so as not to disrupt the festivities.
Despite the construction site, the Marktkirche will remain accessible to the congregation and guests during the work - even if access or routes may be restricted in places. Due to the closure, there may be increased construction site traffic in the area of the construction site access road via the street "An den Quellen" and "Schlossplatz". The area in front of the Marktkirche will be completely closed during this time.
Heavy strain due to solids
The Schlossplatz is in heavy use every year - whether for the Rheingau Wine Week, Sternschnuppenmarkt, international city festival or carnival parade. At the same time, it is of great historical importance as part of the Wiesbaden pentagon. The redesign combines attractive urban greenery with functional infrastructure and ensures a uniform, high-quality appearance.
