Angela Cremer - Atelier 9

Angela Cremer

Angela Cremer, born in Neuss in 1966, lives and works in Wiesbaden. In her work, she explores the significance of painting in and of itself and within its contemporary context. She is interested in questions regarding the balance between surface, material, and motif, as well as the possibility of experiencing painting beyond language.  She questions the boundaries of painting and attempts to expand them. Irritations in the viewing experience, caused by the material, depictions that are thematically reminiscent of ornamentation, and the monotonous, layered treatment of the surface explore the proximity and boundaries to craft and design. Measured against the mass of visual messages surrounding us, her paintings are akin to the state of immersion in water: still, unclear, suspended, slowed down, and free of any intention. Angela Cremer has received several grants, including the Hessian Cultural Foundation’s working grant. From 2020 to 2025, she ran the projektraumKUNST in Saalgasse. Her works have also been shown in solo and group exhibitions.
