When Otto Ritschl moved into his newly built home and studio on the outskirts of Wiesbaden in 1960, the 75-year-old had already created an extensive body of work and was considered one of the masters of abstract painting. The move into the house—which architect Johann Wilhelm Lehr had designed as a place of intimate symbiosis between art and life—also marked a new artistic beginning for the elderly artist: until his death in 1976, he created numerous works here that are now considered among his most impressive and important.
For the first time in decades, the exhibition presented a representative selection of these late paintings by Otto Ritschl. The three dozen or so compositions, all of the same format, rank among the painter’s major works and impressively demonstrate that with them, Ritschl formulated one of the central and original positions in abstract painting.

To accompany the exhibition, the Museum Wiesbaden presented a collection room featuring works by Otto Ritschl from the 1950s starting on April 26, 2024. www.museum-wiesbaden.de
