The Kunsthaus

From the former elementary school to the art school, the Kunsthaus has developed into an oasis of art.

The Kunsthaus Wiesbaden on Schulberg is a place where everyone can engage with art. With six to eight exhibitions, as well as innovative and inclusive event and educational formats, it invites visitors to engage in dialogue about contemporary art and socially relevant topics.

The Artothek offers temporary art for your home. It houses the city’s art collection, featuring 4,000 art treasures available for loan.

International artists work in twelve studios in the historic building of the former Werkkunstschule Wiesbaden.

Here on the Schulberg, artistic production is combined with the presentation and loan of art—a place of exchange and inspiration.

Bringing the history of the Kunsthaus to life

The two-story Kunsthaus, designed by architect Philipp Hoffmann and reminiscent of a palace, was completed in 1863 and initially used as an elementary school; from 1919 onward, it served as a school for crafts and applied arts, which later evolved into the renowned Werkkunstschule, whose students included the artists Peter Roehr and Dieter Rams. Since 1989, the Kunsthaus has been managed by the Wiesbaden Cultural Affairs Office. The historic building houses the studios and the auditorium, which reopened in September 2025 following extensive renovations. The new building, featuring an art gallery spanning over 300 square meters, was completed in 2011. The art library is located in the basement.

As part of the collaborative project “INTERIOR Houses with History,” the Kunsthaus has explored its eventful history alongside five other museums. Further information is available via the link above.
